LNG is considered as the most practicable and promising solution to cope with increasingly tougher emission regulations. During the past 8 years, China has established a comprehensive regulatory framework for LNG fuelled ships; also more than six humdrums LNG fuelled ships were delivered or ordered. In this regard, China has accumulated plenty of experiences on the design and construction of LNG fuelled ships. In this paper, the key points of design and construction of LNG fuelled ships will be discussed based on China practice and IGF Code, which may mainly include the following aspects: the main differences between gas fuel system and conventional oil fuel system, fuel tank selection, design and construction of fuel gas supply system (FGSS), characteristics of a gas engine and how to match it with propulsion system, and lessons learn from experience.
